About Fiona Speirs
Fiona Speirs has extensive ‘hands on’ experience of working with young people with learning difficulties and ASD.
Fiona graduated in 1985 with a B.Ed 2(i) Honours degree in Special Education (formerly known as ‘Mental Handicap’) and taught in a Special School for children with a severe learning difficulty before working as Assistant Headteacher at a school for pupils with ASD in Nottingham for 14 years. During this time, she co-delivered a week of ASD awareness training with a colleague in Shanghai, China.
During recent years, Fiona worked as an Education Consultant, delivering professional development training, conference keynote sessions, workshops and consultancy-based work across the UK. She was engaged by the Department of Education and Skills in Ireland to deliver CPD training around Sex and Relationships Education to ASD teachers.
In 2009, Fiona received an award at National Level for her work developing and delivering a course of Sex & Relationships Education for students with Asperger Syndrome. Following on from the success of penning her resource entitled, ‘A PHSE Programme for Learners with Autistic Spectrum Disorders’, she developed her second resource, ‘Sex & Relationships Education: A visual programme for learners with Autistic Spectrum Disorders or Learning Disabilities’
In 2011 and 2015, Fiona signed a licence agreement with a publisher in Hungary to have both resources translated into Hungarian and distributed into schools across that country. In 2017 Fiona signed a license agreement with Outside The Box Learning Resources in Ireland so that her materials are readily available to Irish schools.
